The lighting industry is full of misconceptions. From the outside, many assume our work revolves around sitting behind a desk – jumping from Teams meetings to client emails, drafting technical reports, and making project decisions between bites of a rushed lunch. And yes, administration, planning, and technical documentation are always important parts of the job.
But the day-to-day reality is far more varied – and often far more demanding.
Below is a closer look at the unexpected, rewarding, and sometimes extreme moments that make our work meaningful.
A typical “desk-based day” might involve:
- Quick meeting with Sales – they’ve got new projects for us to work on
- Review lux level readings, glare assessments, or photometric data
- Preparing lighting impact reports for planning applications
- Talk our CAD expert through the latest project needs
- Respond to client queries and consultant requests
- Join stakeholder meetings to discuss lighting strategy
But that’s far from the whole story.
The 2am Lighting Survey – When the Real Work Begins
And then there are the days (or nights) that most people never see.
When a project requires dark-sky compliance, night-time light pollution measurements, or pre-dawn lux level surveys, we head out long before the world wakes up. This is where technical precision meets true dedication.
A 2am start might involve:
- Waking in total darkness
- Picking up a colleague en-route to the survey location
- Driving an hour or more to a rural or industrial site
- Conducting environmental lighting readings, uniformity checks, or luminance measurements
- Capturing multiple datasets under varying sky conditions
- Pausing to admire a rare clear night sky
- Returning home for a brief rest around 6am
These moments are challenging but rewarding. They demonstrate the unseen commitment that underpins every technical report, every planning submission, and every client recommendation.
What These Days Mean to Us
To bring this experience to life, here’s some thoughts from two of our team:
“Every site tells a different story. The data we collect has a real effect on people’s decisions, communities, and the environment. That’s why we are always putting 100% effort in to take accurate readings and deliver the best solutions possible for our clients.”
— Bradley Russell“Site surveys are truly invaluable, I genuinely enjoy being on site. Stepping out of the office and into the environment itself provides clarity, perspective, and a deeper connection to the project.”
— James Probut
The Heart of the Job – Precision, and Pride
Whether we’re:
- Delivering a technical lighting audit
- Conducting a dark-sky compliance survey
- Preparing a lighting impact assessment
- Attending a sector event
- Or simply answering emails between site visits
…the core of our work remains the same: serving our clients with accuracy, reliability, and a genuine passion about lighting.
The long hours, unpredictable schedules, and early starts aren’t a burden – they’re part of the pride we take in delivering excellent outcomes.
