The Osborne View, a historic and much-loved pub in Hill Head, Hampshire, was devastated by a fire in February 2024, which broke out in the early hours of the morning. Extensive damage was caused to the building, particularly to the upper floors and parts of the interior, which left the pub with significant structural damage.

The Issue

The venue, is situated on the seafront near Fareham, known for its breath-taking views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, with residential houses either side. The owners, Hall & Woodhouse, were keen to restore the venue but also wanted to enhance the space.

This was an opportunity to “rebuild the pub in a more efficient, accessible, sustainable and attractive manner, and in a more coherent, progressive and contemporary style that matches the spirit of other recent developments along the seafront” (Design and Access Statement for preapplication advice).

DFL were brought onboard to perform a Lighting Assessment and create a suitable Lighting Design.

The Solution

Architects, Mackenzie Wheeler created a design that features a four-story, glass-fronted building with a beach bar on the lowest level, a restaurant above, a bar and dining area at road level, and five staff bedrooms on the top floor. The design aims to maximize sea views and includes terraces on both the beach and road levels. The tree planting along the car park would provide enhanced nesting/foraging/commuting habitat. Bat and Swift boxes will be integrated into the new build.

DFL advised that all external lighting should be downward facing warm-white LED and turned off when not required. Lighting in the garden should be limited to where there are changes in level. Patio lighting with asymmetrical luminaires was advised for the outdoor seating areas, to emit a warm white colour temperature. Inside, recessed downlighters will be used on each floor to minimise any light that could spill through the windows.

The Result

Whilst the modern look of the proposal had been a point of contention locally, the planning application was successfully approved on Friday 14th March. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2025, with an estimated duration of 12 months.
