Loftus Town Hall, an impressive gothic structure that was crying out for a DFL makeover. We took up the challenge, creating a new architectural lighting design to make this building a focus point of the town.
Nestled near the coast in North Yorkshire, Loftus, a historic market town, was an underperforming town, with derelict areas, an ailing transport system and an economy that was crying out for help. Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council secured funding, along with assistance from the Government’s Future High Streets Fund and began an ambitious regeneration project to breathe new life into Loftus, whilst preserving the towns heritage. The 10 year vision was developed with stakeholder workshops ensuring that the comments, opinions and objectives of the local community were heard. The ambitious but vital regeneration aimed to celebrate Loftus's unique heritage, improve public spaces, and stimulate economic growth to ensure the town remains a vibrant and attractive place for future generations.
As part of the initial phase, the historic Barclays Bank building has been restored and converted into a commercial hub. The upper floors now offer visitor accommodation, while the ground floor provides retail space.
The former United Reformed Church, vacant for over two decades, is being repurposed to house artist studios, a gallery, and workshop spaces, fostering cultural and creative activities within the community.
And that's where DFL came in...
At the centre of the Loftus regeneration stands one of the oldest buildings in the area - the Town Hall. Loftus Town Hall is the very heart of the community and provides a communal space where residents can come together, from local government meetings and public hearings to cultural events and even a regular tea dance. The architectural lighting design needed to be able to:
-Allow colour changes to celebrate certain events throughout the year
-Enhance the stunning architecture of the building
-Create a point of interest for passers-by and traffic passing through the town
DFL were asked to create a concept architectural lighting design for this historic structure. The challenge was that the building, completed in 1879, is Grade II listed, Gothic revival style and with an octagonal tower.
DFL used the stunning rustication and traditional masonry elements, to emphasise the aesthetic of the building. In order to avoid over-lighting, we focussed on the North and West facades and the clock tower only. Lit mono-chromatically, the scheme would not distract from the architectural prowess of the building.
Loftus Town Hall is now even more gothically spooky at night!
Big thank you to the staff at Loftus Town Hall, Sarah Yates, and Leah Watson, who proudly provided the image.
