outdoor event lighting

DFL brought its specialist lighting and electrical design expertise to the planning application for the Bewl Water Christmas Market, supporting the temporary siting of festive buildings and creating an enchanting scheme of atmospheric lighting that became the heart of the event.

The organisers leaned heavily on the power of light to transform the market into a magical seasonal destination.

But this wasn’t just any setting….it was on the edge of the breathtaking Bewl Water, the largest reservoir in the South East, straddling the Kent and East Sussex border near Lamberhurst.

The Issue

As a country park, Bewl is celebrated not only for its spectacular views but also for its rich biodiversity. The site supports native wildlife, ancient woodlands, and varied habitats, carefully protected through ongoing conservation initiatives. With its designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), every design decision carried added responsibility to balance creativity with environmental stewardship.

Another uniquely complex challenge - and one perfectly suited to DFL’s expertise.

Festive events such as Christmas celebrations rely heavily on creative and atmospheric lighting. However, the setting of Bewl Water presented a unique challenge. Situated within a rural landscape and home to a variety of ecological habitats, the site required a design that delivered an engaging seasonal experience while being sensitive to the surrounding environment. Key considerations included:

- Preserving the rural character of Bewl Water, where dark skies are valued by residents and visitors.

- Minimising disturbance to wildlife, particularly in wooded and aquatic habitats.

- Ensuring safety and accessibility for visitors attending the event.

- Complying with planning policy and demonstrating that the temporary lighting would not create long-term impacts.

Without careful planning, the introduction of large-scale decorative and operational lighting could have resulted in excessive light spill, glare, and unnecessary energy consumption.

The Solution

As the appointed lighting and electrical design consultants, DFL developed a strategy that balanced visual impact with environmental responsibility. Our approach focused on four key principles:

1. Targeted Illumination – Lights were carefully directed to minimise spill and glare. This ensured illumination was focused only where it was needed, preserving dark areas of the landscape.

2. Warm Colour Temperatures – A warm-toned lighting palette was selected, creating a festive and inviting atmosphere while reducing potential disruption to wildlife.

3. Time-Controlled Operation – Automated systems ensured that lighting was active only during event hours, significantly limiting unnecessary energy use and light pollution.

The Result

When the application went before Wealden District Council’s Planning Committee, the lighting and electrical design was recognised as both innovative and responsible. Our Lighting Impact Assessment demonstrated that the scheme was temporary, proportionate, and environmentally sensitive.

The planning committee approved the application in November 2024, allowing the Christmas event to proceed.

The end result was a successful balance between festive celebration and environmental stewardship. Thousands of visitors could enjoy a safe, vibrant, and atmospheric experience, while the natural character of Bewl Water remained protected.

From DFL’s perspective, this project highlights how expert lighting design can transform spaces for temporary events without compromising on sustainability or community values.

Q: What are the main benefits of professional lighting scheme design for temporary outdoor events?

The main Benefits of Professional Lighting Design for Temporary Outdoor Events are:

- Professional lighting design brings both practical and aesthetic value to outdoor events:

- Enhanced Safety & Accessibility: Adequate, well-placed lighting reduces the risk of accidents, guiding guests safely across uneven ground, temporary structures, and pathways.

- Atmosphere & Experience: Creative lighting sets the mood, highlighting key features like stages, tents, and landscaping. It can elevate the ambience, making the event memorable.

- Energy Efficiency: Professionals select the most efficient technologies (e.g., LED systems, solar-powered units, battery storage) to reduce energy consumption and running costs.

- Compliance & Sustainability: Designers are aware of local regulations and best practices regarding light pollution and wildlife impact, ensuring the event meets environmental guidelines.

- Flexibility & Control: Professional systems often include dimmers, timers, and programmable controls, allowing organisers to adapt light levels for different stages of the event.
