motorway lighting motorway upgrade M2 Junction 5

Motorway lighting isn't just about illuminating your route, it’s a crucial safety feature. The £100 million upgrade of the M2 Junction 5 in Kent has now been successfully completed, delivering vital improvements to one of the UK’s busiest and historically most hazardous intersections.

National Highways initiated the project in June 2021 as part of the Road Investment Strategy (RIS2), with a key focus on enhancing motorway lighting, connectivity, safety, and traffic flow.

Improved lighting infrastructure was a fundamental component in making the route safer and more efficient for all road users.

The Issue

Located at the critical junction of the M2 and A249, this major infrastructure upgrade was designed to improve travel links between the Isle of Sheppey, Maidstone, and the M20, one of the main transport corridors connecting Dover, London, and Sheerness.

A center of the redevelopment is the newly constructed Stockbury flyover, stretching approximately 1.5km. This new structure eliminates the need for vehicles to navigate the congested Stockbury roundabout, significantly easing traffic flow. Built using 1,500 custom Reinforced Earth RECO panels, the flyover blends seamlessly into the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, featuring locally sourced flint and cobble.

Two large reinforced concrete bridges were installed using a 450-tonne mobile crane in August and October 2023, impressively without disrupting traffic. Additional enhancements include two new slip roads that allow vehicles to bypass the Stockbury roundabout entirely. The redesigned roundabout now features a revised gyratory system, the removal of previous traffic lights, and a safer new link road connecting Maidstone Road and Oad Street.

DFL’s Strategic Infrastructure Team led the design and execution of the motorway lighting upgrade, dedicating years of expertise to ensuring the system met modern safety and efficiency standards.

The Solution

DFL played a central role in the motorway lighting upgrade, designing and implementing, not just the morall associated electrical systems. The scope included:

Street lighting: Installation of new, energy-efficient lighting systems designed to maximise night-time visibility and improve overall road safety.

Electrical Infrastructure: Implementation and modification of new and existing motorway lighting electrical networks across the upgraded junction.

Project Co-ordiantion and collaboration: working with external multi-disciplinary teams to deliver a full civil and structural engineering package that considered all things such as Clash Detection and BIM modelling.

The motorway lighting design emphasised sustainability, reliability, and adaptability. By using LED technology and smart lighting controls, the system not only improves safety but also reduces maintenance and energy costs.

The Result

The motorway lighting upgrade has delivered measurable improvements across multiple areas:

Improved Visibility Clearly illuminates road layouts, curves, exits, signs, and other vehicles.

Enhances obstacle detection—drivers can identify hazards like debris, stalled vehicles, or animals earlier.

Supports vulnerable road users at slip roads and interchanges by improving visibility of pedestrians and cyclists.

Accident Reduction support to reduced night-time collisions through to better visibility.

Helps prevent fatigue-related incidents by reducing eye strain and maintaining alertness.

Enables quicker driver reaction to unexpected traffic changes or sudden obstacles.

Adverse Weather Safety Improves visibility during fog, rain, or snow, key conditions on UK motorways at night-time.
