Designs for Lighting (DfL) have been established in the North West for the last five years with an office run by John Rands in Southport. Since the second northern lighting design office opened six months ago in Sunderland, DfL have been busy establishing their presence in the North East of England and building on the existing client base established in the North.

Spearheading this initiative is Kevin Dugdale who was employed six months ago as a Project Engineer. Kevin is working on partnerships with some key consultants in the North East and Northern region. Kevin, formerly a Senior Lighting Engineer with AECOM is well established in the area.  Having been brought up and being based in Sunderland he is building on the contacts established in his early career. During his initial period with DfL he’s also been busy getting the company listed on the supply chain of some Tier one consultants. Kevin is also developing his contacts within local authorities and other end users.

DfL will be providing the full range of specialist lighting design services such as energy reduction strategies, lighting impact assessments, highway lighting, exterior lighting, interior lighting, public realm, lighting surveys and technical advice and support.

Kevin has been working in the lighting industry for thirteen years. His previous achievements with AECOM included implementing a lighting impact assessment for a new commercial airport in Gabon, North Africa and designing a challenging tunnel lighting scheme at Castle Baynard in the City of London, as a part of the cycle super-highway. He is qualified with a BA in Computer Science and then continued his studies with a foundation degree in Electrical Engineering (FD Eng). He is also a Member of the Institution of Lighting Professionals (MILP) https://www.theilp.org.uk/ and an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) accredited with the Engineering Council. He is also actively involved on the ILP Lighting Journal and the ILP North East regional committee as Technical Officer .

Kevin and the DfL design team are keen to work collaboratively with local authorities, in the northern region to manage or design LED replacement programmes and to offer assistance with design resources and other services such as maintenance designs, lighting strategies and planning issues

Managing Director Alistair Scott believes that “employing competent lighting engineers such as Kevin is important to assist local authorities in providing essential lighting services, whilst dealing with industry-wide skills shortages”. He added that “Designs for Lighting has a strategy of employing the top skills within the industry in order to fulfil our vision of creating innovative and practical lighting design solutions which are second-to-none.”
